Sandra Lee named one of “50 Most Powerful Women in NY 2011″

Sandra Lee, Editor in Chief of Semi-Homemade Magazine, New York Times Best Selling Author, and Food Network Celebrity, has been named to Crains 50 Most Powerful Women in New York 2011 List.

The celebrity chef, 45, known for budget-friendly recipes, has two Food Network programs and reaches 10 million viewers each month. Her magazine has 300,000 subscribers. Four million copies of her books have been sold, including a memoir in which she chronicled her difficult youth with a family living on food stamps.

Sandra Lee is known for her Semi-Homemade cooking concept, which involves 70 percent pre-packaged products with 30 percent fresh items.

More Risk On: Stocks Surge, As Nikkei Prepares To Break 10,000

The party that started last week continues.

The Nikkei is surging, and getting close to 10,000. In early May, the index did briefly break above that level before heading back down.

Meanwhile, confirming the good times, the euro is also popping to start the week.

Alaska Airlines saw increases in traffic, capacity in June

Alaska Airlines saw a 7.9 percent increase in traffic, or revenue passenger miles, as well as a 6.8 percent increase in capacity, or available seat miles, compared to June 2010. Its load factor, or the percentage of seats filled, was 85.4 percent, up 0.9 of a percentage point from June of last year. In addition, the airline reported to the U.S. Department of Transportation that 91.4 percent of its June flights were on-time, which is up 2.4 percentage points from June of last year.

Does a Virtual Workforce Make Sense for Your Small Business?

Back in the day, being a small business owner was a bit simpler. You needed help getting things done so you went out and hired people, usually locally, to work for you. The idea of hiring a staff member on the other side of the country — or even the other side of the world — was pretty much unheard of.

But, as they say, “That was then; this is now.”

And from a small business owner’s perspective, now is so much better. Thanks to technological advances, global educational achievements, and a 21st-century mindset, we are no longer restricted to where we do business, or who we “hire” to help us get it done.

I’ve discussed the power of the cloud in a previous column. Recently, I caught up with Gary Swart, CEO of oDesk, a global employment company (the company describes itself as an “employment platform”) that enables business owners to hire and manage an online workforce, whether they be actual employees or independent contractors.
