Three hours northwest of Toronto, a group of Ontario manufacturers is throwing the traditional rules of business out the window.

Business owners visit each other’s factories. They share secrets. They plan long-term hiring strategies, collaborate on research and development, and ponder productivity enhancements. They help solve each other’s problems on a shared website.

In years past – tumultuous years, given the surge of competition from China and the soaring Canadian currency – these small and medium-sized makers of furniture, flooring, doors and cabinets viewed each other as direct competitors. For corporations buying or investing in solar panels for their environmental benefits, it makes sense to keep track of the sustainability leaders — and to be wary of the potential risks of associating with manufacturers with less sustainable practices.

Goldman board meets in India amid talk of splitting top jobs

– Half a world away from Wall Street, the board of directors of embattled Goldman Sachs Group Inc were meeting in India amid reports that senior executives have talked about splitting the roles of chief executive and chairman, both held now by Lloyd Blankfein.

The meeting is the first in India for the directors of the investment bank.

Access to the presidential suite hired by Goldman Sachs at Mumbai’s landmark Taj Mahal Palace hotel, which was heavily damaged during the deadly November 2008 militant attack on the financial capital, was blocked to non-guests on Thursday morning.

Goldman declined to give any details of the annual board meeting, but a source previously told Reuters the U.S.

Kira Reed was woozy from local anesthesia for her cesarean-section delivery, but she knew something was wrong.

She was lying in the operating room at Crouse Hospital on March 12, 2010. Her doctor had made the incision.

I could not come up with the word for what I was smelling, Reed said in a recent interview. It did not smell like anything recognizable.

She figured it out and got out the words: I smell something burning. The doctor and nurses told her she had nothing to worry about, Reed said.

I see the smoke, said Reeds mother, who was sitting beside her for emotional support. The obstetrician performing the operation, Dr. Stephen Brown, suddenly saw a small flame on Kira Reeds left side.

Shes right, Brown said, according to Reed.
