What GE’s contract settlement includes
July 4, 2011 – 6:15 amGeneral Electric Co. and its two largest unions, IUE-CWA and the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE), reached a new contract late Sunday that includes pay increases, a one-time cash payment, and a small increase in the amount that unionized workers pay for their health care coverage.
The contract, reached after four weeks of negotiations, calls for:
- A $5,000 cash payment in July;
- Wage increases of 2.25 percent in June 2012, 2.5 percent in 2013, and 3 percent in 2014;
- Eight cost-of-living increases worth $1.13 over the life of the contract;
- A 401(k) plan for new hires instead of the traditional defined benefit plan, with contributions from the company including a 50 percent match up to 8 percent of pay, and an automatic contribution of $600 plus 3 percent of pay from GE;
- An increase in contributions by employees toward health care coverage to 24 percent of costs from 21.5 percent currently. By
