Get some fear in your life – you need it
May 10, 2011 – 10:39 pmMany people you meet will tell you about their goals and ambitions, the things they would love to achieve, the things they are going to do, the actions and plans they have… most of the time these sort of conversations come around the end of the year when people reflect on all the things they haven’t done and they get determined to correct them in the year coming.
How many times have you started and failed to finish something?
How many times have you had a great idea but after a short while it lost its appeal?
Your motivation waned and you were back to your normal self again?
It happens to us all. Its happened to me plenty of times, happens to many of my friends and family, some of them very driven and passionate people too. Its human nature.
We were born with a fear mechanism built into our bodies which is designed to protect ourselves from danger, however most of the time this mechanism just stops us from achieving what we really want.
You see we all love our comfort zones. Naturally we are lazy creatures, we only want to do what is necessary, what we have to do to survive.
Although there is one problem with that, and it is a HUGE problem so listen up.
The problem is that we are only ever truly happy and satisfied in our lives when we are growing, developing and improving.
Yes that’s right.
When you are following through on your goals and dreams and taking action, this is when you feel your best.
When you are shirking from your responsibilities, hiding and not following through – this leads to depression.
Studies actually show that most of the World’s depression comes from this – people not applying themselves. That is how we actually build our self esteem and feel good about ourselves.
So we need fear in our lives to save us from residing in our comfort zones all our lives and the fear we need is the fear of consequences.
For those of you who are employed, your fear of not carrying out your job properly is losing your job and not being able to support your family, pay the bills etc.
But for those of us who are self employed or for the person who wants to get fit, what are the consequences of not following through?
If the consequences are not BIG and SCARY enough then it is most likely that you will slack on some on some of your actions, you will take it a bit easier, you won’t apply yourself to your full potential because that is just human nature.
So what you need to do is ‘outsource your success’.
Yes, outsource it. You need somebody to hold you accountable and with consequences.
So if you really want to excel in business find yourself a mentor, a coach and a team of people around you that make sure you follow through.
If you want to lose weight or get fit then get yourself a personal trainer who will hold you accountable.
The fact of the matter is that, if you can get away with not doing something then most likely you will. But in the end it is only you who loses out.
So instead, learn to see fear as a good thing in your life and use it to drive you towards the life you really want to lead. Either that or roll over and settle for what you know doesn’t really fulfil you.
For me, there really is only one viable option, even if it involves a bit of fear.
Supporting you to higher levels of achievement,
